Remember to good!

What I Should Have Said

Today I remembered something I hadn’t done in a while. Clean the car? No. Not exactly.

The other day when I went to Wash ‘n Roll, I saw two cars - each with a dog - parked next to each other. The animals weren’t reciting poetry, silly. They were just waiting for their people to get done cleaning the car so they could go back about their travels.

I neglected to document this finding at the time. Please consider that oversight now corrected. #MambaOut

It was a thing...

…but now it’s not

If there were some way to play checkers on this website, you have to know I’d do it. Checkers is rad.

I like the checkers board that has red and black squares. Some people like the boards with white and black squares, but I don’t understand why. Those can be fine chess boards, but I don’t think they rate as checkers boards.

I’ve never seen a checker’s board with yellow and black squares. It’s probably not that hard to make. I’d just take a white and black board and paint the white squares yellow.

I wish you would bring some beer next time.

Now hear this

Nothing’s important*

I wonder about this sometimes, but at this moment I’m firmly in the predetermination camp. Free will is good and all, but the weight that places on one’s choices seems too ornerous to abide by. Every choice would have to matter and that just seems too consequential to live with.
Here and now, at least, predetermination is immensely more freeing. I have to be free to create. I can’t be weighed down by the what-ifs or what-may-bes. Maybe if I didn’t function with such large amplitude in my activity. I’d love to live in a nice and tidy box, but that just not where I am. I’ll make this choice and invest what resources I have in pressing into my faith and making the best choice possible with the information I have at my disposal at the time.

*except for the stuff that is important

finish line

Something Funny

I thought for a moment about titling this blog post “almost normal” but hesitated to alter my initial slug. I resist chainging first impressions. And at the end of the day, I don’t put much stock in titles, anyway, so I don’t think it really matters. As a young visual artist, I’d regularly anguish over the title for a piece. Ultimately, I devised an relatively impersonal and substantially meaningless system to name the artwork. That ended up working well enough for me, so I don’t think I really need to sweat these blog post titles.
The real point of all this is to document that the work continues. It’s still substantially undefined, but it’s not without purpose. I’m reaching a new level of conviction that trusting my instincts will bear fruit. I wouldn’t have ever doubted that in the past, but now I’m actually practicing it. This blog is what it is and I don’t need to sweat it (or conprehend it) as long as it continues to be.
One bit to mention is a recent post from the noted creative Dave Winer, explaining his take on blogging. He’s apparently one of the progenitor for the software/technology/medium. He’s been a tireless advocate for maximizing the capacity of the world wide web for individual creative expression. He’s a fascinating Tiwtter follow and an important voice/advocate for learning how to make the most of the opportunities we have at our disposal in this moment.
All this is process for me. I just ought not think too much about it.

Scattershooting

Now I write

I’m gaining a modest amount of confidence in my ability to set my goals and hit my marks. I’ve still got some tricky issues, but my hope is that I can persevere and keep working out things on the fly.
I’m trying to externalize my process. It’s messy and unclear to me exactly what to do at any given point. Here and now, I’m just trying to show up work on repetitions. Quantity is better than quality. Learn this new habit. Thank you.

Hard at work

I had a good little coding Monday, working up some fresh html/css for the code bits repository and pushing it to GitHub through the desktop client (for the first time in awhile). I hope this is a good sign for my productivity in the week ahead.

Training

I just asked for structure and discipline. So here’s a little bit of attention to that.
This whole GitHub project is about modifying my identity; making myself believe that I am the kind of person whose behavior conforms with that of a developer, however approximately. I imagine developers are readily familiar with this web environment. Tending to this blog, forces me to take it in, learn its rudimentary functionality and test out its capacities. I need repitions and increasingly ambitious initiative to produce “tangible” products. Good for this day.

Still working

Green blocks

Coding hasn’t become my second nature, yet. After some four months of “caring” about HTML, CSS and JS, this practice has yet to fully penetrate my brain. I recognize there to be the little matter of applying myself. Practice! Do! Learn! (you know?) Remembering that this blog exists is some first step to a perpetual rededicating myself to the development of this craft. I was just clicking around on some of my GitHub links, stumbled across this site and said to myself, “Oh yeah. I was doing this.”
So far, my chief point of engagement with coding has been modifying GitHub files just enough to get a pretty, green block on my GitHub home page. I’m looking to stretch myself and make this new identity real. It just isn’t going to happen by itself.
I have three active projects to get this workout. One is front-burner grade. The other two will need to be developed opportunistically. The main project is an overhaul of www.sportsandmedia.com. I’m feeling my way through identity and messaging priorities, working out one chunk of code at a time. There’s a larger issue of digital infrastructure for the organization. I haven’t been able to resolve any of these issues in the abstract, so I’m hoping that reacting to step-by-step development challenges will force me to clarify my thinking and action. The other two projects are at www.cdhart.com and www.landsquid.com. Those will be developed as deadlines present themselves, using the tools and ideas I stumble across in trying to focus on my main project.

Working

Here ‘we’ go

I’ve spent my avialable energy in the intervening time from my last post to grind on the mechanincs of getting a work flow established with GitHub. I’ve gpten the files to www.cdhart.com established in a functioning repository that are accessible on my desktop. I’ve also gotten those desktop files synced with my webhost. It’s not pretty, but I’ve gotten things functional.
Now may be a good time for a GitHub tutorial to understand how this stuff is really suppoed to work. Here is this: GitHub help.
